Aubert & Duval in Pamiers: managing the energy performance of an industrial site consuming over 100 GWh a year

In Pamiers, in the heart of the Ariège region, Aubert & Duval operates one of its industrial sites. A long-established player in French metallurgy, the group consumes more than 100 GWh of energy a year there, with gas and electricity costs running into several million euros. How do you manage consumption on this scale as closely as possible to the processes? For several years, Aubert & Duval has been working with Lemon Energy to deploy energy monitoring tailored to the processes of the Pamiers site.

The context: energy-intensive furnaces and presses, and a quantified 2030 target

The energy consumed in Pamiers is mainly used to run the site's furnaces and presses. The manufacturer has set out its decarbonisation challenge unambiguously: a target of cutting its CO2 emissions by 38% by 2030. To get there, Aubert & Duval needed a tailor-made energy monitoring system.

The challenge was therefore to have a monitoring system precise enough to be genuinely used by the operational teams.

The solution: high-precision energy monitoring

To meet this need, Lemon Energy deployed an energy monitoring system built around three pillars:

  • Process-specific monitoring: the system targets the site's significant energy uses, including furnaces, power hammers, presses, ovens, machining lathes, shot blasters and more.
  • Automated daily EnPIs: most of the energy performance indicators already existed but needed to be automated. Today, they are calculated and updated every day with no manual processing. This enables closer monitoring that is more relevant for operators and workshop managers.
  • Multi-energy metering scope: gas and electricity consumption is consolidated at workshop level.

220 measurement points deployed to monitor energy performance

The system now relies on around 220 remote metering points, consolidating gas and electricity consumption and providing a detailed view of the different energy uses.

The energy performance indicators (EnPIs) are automated and updated daily. Teams can thus compare energy consumption with production and more easily track the performance of their equipment.

The goal is not simply to collect more data: it is to turn that data into information the teams can use directly.

"Lemon Energy gives us an overall view of all our meters, gas and electricity, across the workshop and by piece of equipment. For us, it's a real opportunity: it lets us assess our losses."

The benefits: designing best practices and correcting consumption drifts in real time

The value of energy monitoring shows above all when a drift can be quickly identified, understood and then corrected.

Thanks to indicators available every day, teams can track how their consumption evolves, test new practices, detect deviations and feed into their energy action plan.

This organisation makes energy performance an operational topic, built into the way the site runs, rather than a one-off exercise based on energy bills.

"All of this helps us gain visibility, build our action plan and above all reduce our consumption. Having this day-to-day monitoring really lets us be proactive, identify drifts as quickly as possible and correct them in good time."

A drop of around 20% in the workshop's consumption

This approach is now delivering tangible results. In the workshop concerned, energy consumption has fallen by around 20%, allowing teams to save time when looking for efficiency solutions for their production equipment.

Energy monitoring is obviously not, on its own, the source of all these savings. It does, however, give teams the information they need to measure progress, identify losses and guide their actions.

"Today, with fewer machines, we manage to achieve the same output."

This case study illustrates our approach at Lemon Energy: energy data only matters when it enables action.

Measuring, automating indicators, analysing drifts and then turning these findings into concrete actions: this continuity is what makes energy savings last.

This monitoring is becoming one of the cornerstones of their broader approach to energy management and ISO 50001 certification.
